World Oceans Day

Happy World Oceans Day!

A year ago today, I had the chance to celebrate World Oceans Day by participating in a beach cleanup with Uto Ni Yalo Trust in Suva, Fiji. I learned a lot about what kinds of waste end up in the ocean, and how important it is to protect our oceans from litter and pollution. Did you know that by 2050, plastic in the ocean is estimated to outweigh fish?

So, what can we do to help protect our oceans?

Here are 5 ways to get started TODAY!

  1. Work on reducing your individual plastic consumption - and urge the companies you buy from to do the same! (If you’re not sure where to start, shoot me an email!)

  2. Participate in a garbage clean-up to help protect your local waterways. This can be a socially-distanced activity, and it’s a great way to pass time in quarantine!

  3. Conserve water! A few ideas: use a shower timer (or your phone), check your pipes/faucets for leaks, and collect rainwater in a barrel to use on your lawn and garden.

  4. Research the products you use and consume. If you’re planning on visiting an ocean this summer, invest in some reef-safe sunscreen. If you eat seafood, do some research to find companies with sustainable fishing practices.

  5. Sign petitions and reach out to elected officials. World Oceans has a petition on their website, worldoceansday.org. The petition is calling upon world leaders to agree to protect at least 30% of our Oceans by 2030.

What are you doing to celebrate our oceans today?! 🌊
