DIY Vegan Lotion Bars

IMG_4200.jpeg

I’ve been excited to try lotion bars for a while, but have held off because I thought they were much more complicated to make. Turns out, I was wrong!

These are so surprisingly quick and easy to make, I was able to play around with the recipe and have them in my fridge by the end of my lunch break!

Lotion bars are a great alternative to cream and liquid moisturizers for a number of reasons:

  • they’re package-free and can be made completely zero waste

  • they’re small, lightweight and easy to travel with

  • with only a handful of natural ingredients, these are free of gross chemicals found in store-bought lotions

I like to use mine right after the shower and before bed so that my skin has time to absorb the oils. Since these tend to be oilier than regular lotions, I recommend giving your skin some time to absorb these luxurious oils before getting dressed to avoid getting your clothing greasy.

These 4 ingredient, microwave-only, vegan and zero-waste lotion bars only take 5 minutes to make. If you try them, let me know what you think!

DIY Vegan Lotion Bars

Makes 3-4 bars

Time: 5 minutes to make, 2-3 hours to chill

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup of cocoa butter melts (or substitute for shea butter)

  • 1/2 cup of oil(s) of choice (I used 2 parts avocado oil: 1 part coconut oil)

  • 1/2 cup of soy wax flakes

  • 10-20 drops of essential oils, for scent (I used lavender)

To Make:

  1. Add the cocoa butter, oil(s), and soy wax flakes to a glass measuring cup or microwave safe bowl in the order listed above.

  2. Microwave in 1-2 minute intervals, stirring well in between until melted.

  3. Once completely melted, remove from microwave and stir in the essential oil.

  4. Pour the liquid mixture into soap molds or muffin tins. Transfer to the refrigerator and let chill for 2-3 hours until hardened.
